demand

Definition

A demand is a formal request, usually in writing, asking someone to do something specific like pay money they owe you or stop doing something harmful to your business. It carries more legal weight than a regular request because it signals that you are prepared to take legal action if the person does not comply.

Example

If a client refuses to pay a $5,000 invoice after multiple reminders, you might send a formal demand letter giving them 10 days to pay before you file a lawsuit.

Watch Out

Sending a written demand often starts the clock on legal deadlines, so keep a copy with the date you sent it because that record could matter greatly in court.
