Definition
Delegation is when one party to a contract hands off their responsibilities under that contract to a third party who wasn't originally involved. The original party typically remains on the hook if the new person fails to perform, so this isn't a clean break from your obligations.
Example
You hire a caterer for your company event, and they quietly hand off the cooking duties to another catering company without telling you. That handoff is a delegation, and your original caterer is still legally responsible if the food is terrible or never shows up.
Watch Out
Many contracts contain anti-delegation clauses that prohibit this practice entirely, so always check your agreements before assuming someone can pass their duties off to another party.
