counsel
Definition
Counsel is simply another word for a lawyer or attorney who provides legal advice and represents people in legal matters. When someone refers to 'counsel' in a legal document or court setting, they are talking about the lawyer involved in the case or transaction.
Example
If a contract says 'each party should consult with their own counsel before signing,' it means both sides should have their own lawyer review the agreement before putting pen to paper.
Watch Out
When a court document says you have 'the right to counsel,' it means you have the right to have a lawyer represent you, and ignoring that right or showing up without one can seriously hurt your case.
