Definition
A continuation is a type of patent application that lets an inventor file a new patent based on an invention they already have a pending patent for, using the same original filing date. This is useful when you want to claim different aspects of your invention that you did not cover in your first patent application.
Example
If you patented a new type of coffee maker but later realized you forgot to protect the specific brewing mechanism, you could file a continuation to claim that part while keeping your original filing date.
Watch Out
You must file a continuation before your original patent application is approved or abandoned, so timing matters enormously and missing the window means losing your rights to that earlier date.
