client data
Definition
Client data refers to any personal or business information that your customers share with you when they do business with you, such as their names, addresses, email addresses, payment details, or purchase history. As a business owner, you have a legal and ethical responsibility to keep this information safe and use it only for the purposes your customers agreed to when they shared it with you.
Example
If you run an online shop and collect customer email addresses for order confirmations, those email addresses are client data, and you cannot legally start sending those customers promotional newsletters unless they specifically agreed to receive them.
Watch Out
Many privacy laws, including state-level regulations and international rules like GDPR, require you to tell customers exactly how you plan to use their data before you collect it, and breaking these rules can result in serious fines.
