acquirer

Definition

An acquirer is a company or person that purchases another business, either by buying its assets or by buying enough of its ownership shares to take control of it. Think of it as the buyer in a business sale, the one writing the check and gaining ownership of what was previously someone else's company.

Example

If a large restaurant chain buys your small café and takes over all operations, that restaurant chain is the acquirer.

Watch Out

If someone approaches your business as a potential acquirer, get a lawyer involved before signing anything, because the acquirer's legal team will be working hard to protect their interests, not yours.
