acknowledgment
Definition
An acknowledgment is a formal declaration where you sign a document in front of a notary public and confirm that you signed it willingly and that you are who you say you are. The notary then stamps or seals the document to certify that the signing was legitimate. This process is required for many important legal documents like deeds, contracts involving real estate, and certain business agreements.
Example
If you are buying a commercial property for your business, you will need to sign the deed in front of a notary, who will then acknowledge that you personally appeared and voluntarily signed the document.
Watch Out
Skipping the acknowledgment step when it is required can make an otherwise valid document completely unenforceable, so always check whether your contracts or property documents need to be notarized before you sign them.
