access credentials

Definition

Access credentials are the usernames, passwords, PINs, security keys, or other login information that prove someone has the right to enter a system, account, or physical location. Think of them as the digital equivalent of a key to your business — whoever holds them can get in and act on your behalf.

Example

If an employee uses their company email login and password to access your accounting software, those login details are their access credentials for that system.

Watch Out

When an employee leaves your company, failing to immediately revoke their access credentials can leave your systems legally and financially exposed if they misuse that access later.
